Just over 176.000 km

A sunny Sunday and a Mercedes-Benz 300SE W126, what combination could be better for a pleasant afternoon cruise.

While cruising along a smooth stretched highway with a bit more then the allowed speed limit , I noticed that the odometer was running close to 176.000 km. A coffee break  in the middle of Nowhere by sunshine and chirping birds was another Highlight of the afternoon trip.
My odometer showed 176.106 km when shutting off the engine.
An afternoon well spent.

Talk to you soon.

Rust Inspection

Today was another good day.

As every W126 enthusiast know, the area below the windshield, and especially the corners with the drains are prone for rust. If not looked after early enough, you will find big water paddles in the foot well of your nice car.

Plenty time on hand and the first time working on this project, I started by removing the wiper arms, the seal to the instrument compartment, the seal on the windshield and finally the leave cover. An astonishing result for an 23 year old car.
Except for 2 tiny spots of very light top rust, it was like a year old. Dusting the whole area and protecting with a very thin layer of FluidFilm, I was finished.

Putting it all back together and taking a short drive finished the day of a very happy owner
of a Mercedes-Benz W126.

New Shocks Installed

Finally...the day has come.

Today my 300SE got the long awaited new shocks installed. It is quite a while that the new shocks had arrived. It was April 12 this year but other more important things had to be done first.
Good prepared I started out with the front shocks first. This was a slight easy task. Loosening the bolts in the motor compartment first, raising the car and  getting the wheel off. Now was room to loosen the old bolts, first the front one. Pushing the shock down through the opening, moving side ways making room for the other bolt. Preparing the new shock with all its rubber and metal plates and installing in reverse order. Putting the wheel on, lowering the car and thightening the upper bolts in the motor compartment. Job finished.

Installing the rear shocks, that's quite different, but after preparing the back seat area, it was as easy as upfront. Curious about the installation ? Take a look at my easy to follow write-up.

Visit to Regina

The first trip of the 2013 driving season was a visit to Regina.

Starting by wonderful sunshine and temperatures of 20șC to 24șC created the perfect atmosphere for an unforgettable drive with my 300SE. Testing the new water pump and the fixed vacuum leak was one of the things which made this trip "not a regular" one.
The two hour drive (one way) over parts of the bumpy highway was superior handled by my 300SE. The typical "Sonderklasse style" of drive.

For the time of year I was awarded again with beatiful scenery. The trip is so common, but one can still find new surprises.

As for the machine, coolant temperatur of 85șC at on outside temperatur of 24șC indicated a proper function of the coolant system. 700RPM in P and 550RPM in D with a warm machine at an oil pressue of 1 bar showed that the vacuum leak was fixed.

A happy owner of a Mercedes-Benz 300SE retured home.

Blood Transfusion

Fresh blood for a longer life.....

After 18 month a blood transfusion or widely known as an oil change, was due for my 300SE.
Proper material is important to me. The best oil filter for such a car is still the big Mann Filter W719/13. As for the oil, nothing other than synthetic and for the viscosity a 5W-40 is in the proper range. As the W126 serie is over 20 years old, don't forget to replace the copper seal ring with a new one.(MB # 007603 014106) This way you are sure it will be nice and dry underneath. And as a side note, the drain plug is tightened with 25Nm.

With such a good weather today and this kind of easy job, the afternoon was well spent. A short test drive with fresh "motor blood" finished the day perfectly.

Talk to you soon.
